the known self

“This is what I believe: That I am I. That my soul is a dark forest.  That my known self will never be more than a little clearing in the forest. That gods, strange gods, come forth from the forest into the clearing of my known self, and then go back. That I must have the courage to let them come and go. That I will never let mankind put anything over me, but that I will try always to recognize and submit to the gods in me and the gods in other men and women. There is my creed.”

~ D. H. Lawrence

“Love is never a fulfillment. Life is never a thing of continuous bliss. There is no paradise. Fight and laugh and feel bitter and feel bliss: and fight again. Fight, fight. That is life.”

~ D.H. Lawrence

Oh yes, my soul too, a dark forest.  And I believe that life is not continuous bliss and I believe in the need to fight for that bliss.  No one is going to give it to you, so yes, laugh and feel the bitterness but laugh at that too.  Continue. Continue.

Yesterday I took the family out on a photo excursion.  It had snowed overnight and was snowing still, though off and on.  When I got home I added the fake snow from Picnik which is maybe a bit silly but I think also fun. Is it too cheesey?  What do you think?

Last night we watched the movie Poetry. The acting is really beautiful and the story is complex, infused with sadness, very real.  I do highly recommend it.

  1. That clip really choked me up....I will be sure to see it. I love your photos. The fake snow is the best!!! You should put some fake snow in some summer shots, too - how cool would that be? Thanks for the D.H. L. quote. Many in our household needed that one today.
