a beehive here inside my heart

L A S T   N I G H T   A S   I   W A S   S L E E P I N G

by Antonio Machado
translated by Robert Bly

Last night, as I was sleeping,
I dreamt -- marvelous error!—
that a spring was breaking
out in my heart.
I said: Along which secret aqueduct,
Oh water, are you coming to me,
water of a new life
that I have never drunk?

Last night, as I was sleeping,
I dreamt -- marvelous error!—
that I had a beehive
here inside my heart.
And the golden bees
were making white combs
and sweet honey
from my old failures.

Last night, as I was sleeping,
I dreamt -- marvelous error!—
that a fiery sun was giving
light inside my heart.
It was fiery because I felt
warmth as from a hearth,
and sun because it gave light
and brought tears to my eyes.

Last night, as I slept,
I dreamt -- marvelous error!—
that it was God I had
here inside my heart.

I've shared the Machado poem before, but it's interesting how a certain poem will find you, and then find you again.  I was looking for poems about bread, about how it sustains us, poems about how we are sustained, about sustenance, about what is essential, necessary, for our daily existence. The most basic things.  But maybe this poem works just as well - the need for light and honey and spring in our heart - are these not essential to us every day?

And naturally, the stanza about making honey from old failures in the beehive within our heart - this speaks to me so profoundly, as I wait for my copy of Hive: A Forgery, to make it's way to me.  I'll be making an official announcement, and getting to work on 'promoting' the book once I've had a look at it, but for those interested in the process of publishing through CreateSpace......I can tell you that as soon as I hit the "approve" button on my proofs, within a day, there it was up for sale on amazon.com.  So, talk about surreal.  As soon as it arrives, I'll post photos of how it looks and tell you my reaction.

I don't so much wish to 'promote' the book, as to help it find its way into the hands of interested readers, you know?  Well, I think you'll understand that, you who read this blog regularly.  So thank you for that.
