some vaster space

"The surfaces of the world are aesthetically uneven. You come around a bend in the road and the world suddenly falls open. When we come upon beautiful things . . . they act like small tears in the surface of the world that pull us through to some vaster space."

from On Beauty and Being Just by Elaine Scarry

But why just 'come upon beautiful things' - these rents in the universe, these tears - why not seek them out?

Maybe in winter they are easier to spot against all that white, in the starkness of the season.

  1. Keep seeking and sharing them with us. Those of us not out there in the frosty mornings look so forward to seeing what it's like! Thanks for that,

  2. I believe seeking out beauty can blind one to the surprises that beauty likes to bestow us when we are in a receptive state. Being open is a non-doing were seeking is a doing. Beauty favors us with this undoing mindfulness.
